What if automation turns the humans into the widgets?

When everything is finely-tuned and pristinely configured, do we risk becoming ‘widgets’ ourselves… products of our own design left standing at the front of the assembly line and wondering what purpose the machine serves? It seems like the end game of maximum automation is not inherently optimal for wellbeing.
